Junk Yard Motors
Well I'm looking for some opinions... My truck '73 F100 4x4 with a 360. In the past I have asked the question and searched the forum on coverting to a 390. Seems like a popular move. I considered the move but have another idea... Getting a rebuildable 390 from a local junk yard. Rebuild the block, then transfer my rebuilt heads (only 300 miles on them), my 4bbl intake and carb.
I called all of the local junk yards in Central Oregon and only one has (they think) a 390 (rebuildable) without manifolds for $250.00. Is a rebuildable 390 worth $250.00?
My logic here is, what if when I take the 360 apart to do a 390 conversion and I find problems. Then I'll be without a truck until I make necessary repairs. But on the other hand, if I get a 390, build it the way I want and then switch over my heads manifold, carb and other items the swap will go quicker with less down time.
Many Thanks
Jeremy
BTW: I've been looking at a set of Hedman headers and going with a dual 2.5 inch exhaust before I change to a 390. Any recommendations on mufflers? I want it to be quiet on the inside the cab. Resonance gives me a headache.
If you are close to Klamath Falls, I could help you out in that department! 2.5" inch is a good place to start. I run a 2.5" on my 76 4X4 with Flowmaster 40's. The pipes run all the way out the back! You can't hear the noise from the Flowmasters. But remember I have a 4" Lift with a 3" body Lift. So I'm nowhere close to the ground. I have noticed that cars or trucks that are close to the ground have a lot of cab noise where I don't have any at all! "JMO"
