Shop Vac Question

I have one of those big Shop Vacs made by Rigid and was wondering how ofton I should change the filter on it ? (Never bothered in 4 years I've had it) I noticed it looses suction when the filter gets clogged and it improves dramatically when I shake it out.

I got a small shop vac and when I vacuum up alot of dust it clogs the filter pretty quick. I shake it out and when I'm done with it I wash (gently) the filter and let it dry untill the next use. Haven't had to buy any new filters yet.

ridgid says you can wash them will a gentle spray of water.

I"ve got an old black one with no filter. It used to shoot dust up everywhere but then I duck taped a sponge to where it shoots air out. It's soo ghetto redneck.

I have had one for 10 years and just shake it out and wash or blow it out occasionally and have never had a problem. If it tears it will need to be replaced.
