Sierraben, we had a few fat kids, but most of us were ripped. The ones who were fat, somehow always managed to be the ones that hit the baseball the furthest, or got the football right up the middle..That was so cool.

Reading these post bring back some memories. I think back when I rode with my dad when he was a truckdriver, at that time he had a REO pulling a dropdeck. We used to stop at the truckstops and I remember the waitress wore white dresses and also a white hat, a lot of the drivers wore white shirts and ties and those hats that looked like a policemans hat with a badge of their company on the front. And the food was usually home style cooking with no frozen food. The hamburger was in bulk, and they used a scoop to dip it out and into a hamburger press to make the shape and onto the grill. Darn those fresh burgers were good, and add some home cut potatoes made into fries, fresh homemade pie for desert to top it off. The owners took alot of pride in preparing the food and making you feel welcome. Life was good!
In my own 35+ years of driving I have seen these places go to the wayside and being replaced by the super truck stops that sometimes leave a lot to be desired. It seems like people are in too much of a hurry to enjoy the simple things. (like a good meal)

BeemerNut, I didn't mention it (Streets of S.F.) because that was after highschool.

Man did M. Douglass look young; we all did 30+ years ago.

Here's one more item:

Slot cars; either HO scale or my favorite, 1/24 scale.

I had a *** GT40; a *** La Cucaracha and 2 hand built slot cars.

Streetcruzer, forgot about the bulk hamburger in the tray in the butcher's window.

OK, WHERE'S THAT DAM TIME MACHINE?

You guys must all be a bunch of old duffers. How about Bobby Bensen in the Big Bend Country of Texas. I used to rush home from school to turn on the radio to listen to him. Believe it or not I still have that old Philco console radio here in my den. How about the Lone Ranger and Gene Autry on the radio. I use to go to bed at night and put the little table model radio under the covers with me and listen to the phantom. innersanctum, and the shadow. Use to scare the heck out of me. Ahh the great memories.

wb6vvv, in the advent of TV, radio did start to take a back seat to TV.

But I do remember some of the radio shows you mentioned, such as The Lone Ranger, Inner Sactum and of course, The Whistler.

Yea I remember when we got our first TV. It was during the replubican convention when Ike was nominated. I sat there and watched the whole thing just to be watching TV. I have hated political conventions ever since. I do remember watching the indian test pattern while the Star Spangled Banner played and then watching the screen disapear into snow. Those were the days. I think we had two channels then. Now we have hundreds and still nothing worth watching. Well Sierraben I am going to bed. you have a good evening.

Gottaford, I remember no freeways. It used to take us a half day to get to the beach from San Bernardino. Down thru the Santa Ana Canyon, thru Tustin, past the Blimp hangers into Newport. What a horrid drive. Then they put in the freeways and man we could get down there in 1 1/2 hours. And then all the people came. Now it takes all day to get to Newport. Unless you want to start out at 1am. Thats progress for you.

And from your post, comes the hijack question of the day:

Why didn't the coyote just order up some chicken take-out with some of the money that he spent at ACME?????

(Now back to regularly scheduled programming. . . . .)

"Why didn't the coyote just order up some chicken take-out with some of the money that he spent at ACME?????"

Because he was under contract from Warner Bros. to chase the roadrunner?

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming!

Yes the good old days riding around in my parents first new car a Pinto wagon. The remote for the TV had a cable. Atari. Beta, instead of VHS. 8 tracks. Riding around with my grandpa in his 72 F250 with like 390,000 miles on it. Going out to the local truck stop diner for beakfast with Grandpa was the best.

A&W has made a huge come back out here in California. And they have rootbeer on tap and its GREAT.
