I own a preowned '04 F-250 Super Duty Extracab FX4. Today, I noticed what appeared to be the marks where a skid plate or some other cross frame support was remove from the area directly underneath the transmission. The mark apears directly behind the rear shackle for the front leaf spring. There are two holes per frame rail. The total width of the "clean" mark on the frame rails is about four inches. I am not sure ,but I think the previous owner may have had a few chilly pops and went off road (intentionally or not) and bent whatever used to be there and it was removed to hide the evidence.
Any light that could be shed on this would be helpful and appreciated.

Yes it should have a trans skid plate . My 04' f250 fx4 had one . I had to take the one of my 05' when i installed my lift , the radius arm drop brackets use the holes the skid plate is installed with .
If the truck has either the FX4 or the skid plate package, it should have a skid plate under the fuel tank and another one under the transfer case. The one under the transfer case is a big "U" shaped plate that went from frame rail to frame rail. Like you said, maybe it was removed because it was bent. If your frame looks ok at that location, I wouldn't worry about it. You could always order a new one from Ford, or search the local junk yards.
