My engine assembly just came to a drastic halt. My and my buddy Steve were putting the cam bearings in when we got to the second to last one. It was way too small to fit. It would go in and out with absolutly no pressure. It appears as if that one journal (2nd one in from the front of the motor) has been bored a little larger. There is an obvious difference between the bearing that came out and the bearing that is supposed to go in. You can feel it just by holding the two in your fingers. My parts guy told me there is no way a responsible machine shop would machine only one journal, but I dont know any of this engines history. All of the other bearings fit nice and snug like they should. So it appears that there is only one journal machined larger. Heres where I'm hoping someone can help me out. The bearing that came out of the oversize journal cannot be reused, so I have to find out where to get one exactly like it. I bought Federal Mogul Bearings for the cam. The part number is 1403 M. The part number of the single bearing that should fit in that journal is 2601 DRI. The part number of the bearing that came out is SH-511. Can anyone tell me who makes this "SH-511" bearing? My parts store looked through all their books and couldn't find a cross reference. I know I'm taking a longshot here, but I'm hoping someone here can help. I HAVE to find this bearing. Any help is appreciated.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Dec-02 AT 10:13 PM (EST)]You might try compairing that particular bearing with a similar one from another new set, if your parts dealer will allow it. It's rare, but even today some flaws get by manufacturer quality controls. It's hard to believe that a machine shop would turn a single cam bearing hole, unless there was some kind of weird previous damage, possibly a really bad spun bearing opened the hooe up a bit, but the odds of that seem really low. Gotta be a wrong bearing in my opinion. I have found that a good automotive machine shop has the people to talk to about stuff like this.
Don't forget they need to go back in order. Maybe find an engine shop that can help you out. I had a guy install mine for me and it didn't cost too much ($20???).
