overheating

my truck is a 87 F150 4x4, 6 cyl, 4sp, i've replaced the water pump, thermostat a 192, had the radiator rodded out, and replaced a couple of the hoses. problem being the truck still overheats, not all the time, just on steep inclines and when out 4 wheeling, only thing left to replace is the heater core, thats my question, would heater core blockage cause the truck to overheat. out on the highway or moderate grades the truck runs fine, in fact i'm getting 23 miles per gallon, just on steep inclines and when put in 4 wheel drive does it boil over. any help would be appreciated, any ideas

No, I don't believe you heater has anything to do with it. You could turn the heater on full blast when it starts overheating and see if that helps.

I would check to make sure your clutch fan is good and that your fan shroud is intact. If all else fails, a electric fan on the front might do the trick.

You said you "replaced a couple of the hoses"; did you replace the lower hose? If not, it could be collapsing when that 6 is working hard (steep hills and 4-wheelin').
