I'm thinking of down sizing my F-150 to a Explorer since gas prices are going through the roof and I'm moving 10 farther from work. I'm getting between 15-16 mpg. I'd like find a 5-spd 4-door Explorer, but that not easy to do. What is everyone getting in theirs city/highway?
just got back from a trip to penns cave. on rt 80 cruise control set at 70 mph and i got 19.5 mpg. we have a 04 with a v-6. city milage is about 14 to 15. i am a little dissapointed with this mialage as my e 250 with a 5.4 v-8 gets 14 mpg all the time.
If you want better mpg get a small car. I just traded a VW Jetta diesel that never got worse than 35 mpg in town. If the kids had stopped growing it would have been fine, but we just started splitting the poor Jetta at the seams. I got a used 2005 Explorer XLT V6 4x4 with 14,000 miles on it. Checking my first tank of gas today I got 17.8 in mostly city driving. Love the third row seat. Finally a little peace and quiet.
My 94 Explorer V6 gets 17.6 mpg in town and about 20.1 on the interstate. Bronco II 2.9 gets about 20 (mixed) and old '86 F150 carbed 300 gets about 9 with a good tailwind.
....just traded in a 2000 EB V6 with 66,000 mi and it was still getting 19.5 mpg on 87 octane. This was not broken down city/hwy. There is not much hwy, just around town. The 2005 EB V6 has a 3.73 rear and it is getting 16.5 mpg and it now has 9400 miles. I am a little disappointed, but If mileage was the top priority, Explorer would not be the choice. Good luck in your search.
I have an 05 Explorer XLS and average 15.2 mi to gallons. Mixed city and hwy. I drive 70-80 on hwy. Typically follow city speed limits. Used Shell 87 Octane for a few tanks and Fina 87 for a few, I can tell no difference. Current Mileage 2885.
17.2 mixed city and freeway with the 5.0 V8 using 87 octane. 130,600 miles. This is better than my 88 Bronco (240,000) with a 5.0 and about the same as my 84 Ranger (150,000) with a 2.8. Not the best but could be worse.
I've gotten as high as 22 MPG with all highway driving with the 5.0L V8 with my '98. If you are looking for good gas mileage, changing from an F-150 to Explorer will not result in much of a difference IMHO. I've had both and they got about the same MPG.
2000 XLT 4x4 4.0 SOHC 70,000mi (purchased used about a month ago) Around town I can get as high as 18mpg, but thats if I drive the speed limit and I'm easy on the gas pulling away from stops. On the highway its not much better, again about 18 - 19mpg. I drive fairly fast, 75 to 80 and I haven't been able to take a long highway drive without the A/C on. I think if I kept it on cruise control around 70 with no A/C I could get 20mpg.
just made a 700 mi trip doing approx 75mph both ways, with about 75 mi city driving, and averaged approx 21mpg. All week in the city, with starts and stops maxin out at 40mph approx 17-18, but thats grampa-footin sunday cruise kinda driving. 2002 Ex. Sport Trac 4l SOHC V6
If you're talking about the cold air intake offered by k&n, and others, all i'll say is this:
a friend put one on his sport trac and one on his f150 and hated both. he had detonation and more engine noise. i'm not sure if his mileage increased though.
I bought my '02 Explorer XLS (6 cylinder) with 13 miles on the odometer and have tracked every fillup on Ownersite.com. The truck currently has 97,000 miles on it, and I have averaged 19.62 miles per gallon. Change the oil every 5K, air filters every 30K and keep the tires properly inflated. Other than a wheel bearing at 50K, this has been a trouble-free vehicle.
Love this truck! Plan on buying an F250 early next year, but the Explorer is staying in the household.
