Rust repair

Well, about finished sanding the cab today when my por-15 cataloge i ordered came. Noticed they have a primer that will allow paint to be applied over it. Thought it might work to cover all the cab with the por-15 and then primer and paint over it. Has anyone here used their product? How well does it work and would it work to cover the cab and still get a good finish? Does it bond well to bare metal? Don't want to waste money if it doesn't work, i'll just have keep sanding away until the rust is completely gone.

I personally would not want to leave any rust under a new paint job that might eventually surface again. Not sure how the top coat would look over POR15 and primer but my guess is it would take a lot of block sanding to get a decent finish, although block sanding is the key to a nice finish anyway. I would either media blast the surface to get rid of the rust and/or replace any rusted through areas, then epoxy prime and top coat with either acrylic enamel or a good base coat/clearcoat finish. Just my opinion though and getting ready for paint takes alot of effort that I wouldn't want to worry about by leaving rust. Good luck.

I have used ZeroRust in a number of places on my truck's sheet metal. I clean the area down to bare metal. Some places may have a slight amount of residual surface rust in deeper pits from previous corrosion. I apply it directly to the bare steel and it converts any traces of rust that may be left. Seems to work very well and is inexpensive. I have used as both the spray and brush application.

ZeroRust is not a substitute for good metal prep. I wouldn't use it in lieu of rust removal. I haven't used it in areas where I will be applying primer and topcoating. I also haven't had it on the truck for a year yet, so can't speak to longevity.

I would guess that it is a good product for rust protection. I just don't trust it as a base for the exterior paints. That's not because of a bad experience. It is just my paranoia about paint jobs. I agree with 56Fun regarding proper paint prep. As long as the paint can get hold of the base material, you're good to go and block sanding is everything about final finish quality.
