I have a 99 F-150 V6 that the Engine Light came on. It came on while I left work. I rode all the way to my parents house which is about 45 minutes away to diagnose it. It came up as a P0181. I then came home and looked in my Ford manual and it wasn't listed. I don't even know where the Fuel Temperature Signal sensor is. I replaced my PCV valve and hose last week when the P0171 code came on. That fixed the code until today. Not sure what else it could be.
Unless your truck is different than the ones I've seen you shouldn't have a fuel temperature sensor.
Are you positive that it was a P0181 and not a 171 again?
Yes. The engine light just came on again today and spit out a P0171 code. I am not sure what else I can try. I tried to test the oxygen sensor but can't find a way to test it. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.
I was very frustrated the other day with my truck and went and bought a OBDII code reader for $100. I had a DPFS code 1405. Between my ford book and the code reader I was actually able to fix the problem. I estimated that I saved $300 over having the dealer work on the problem. ($98 for the sensor, $5 for the hose and $100 for the code reader, and 30 minutes of my time.)

I had codes P0171 and P0174 with rough idle on my 98 Expedition. I checked the DPFE sensor and sure enough it was clogged with white powdery deposits. A new sensor for $51 at Auto Zone should fix the problem. It did on our 97 Explorer which had a code relating to EGR function. The metallic sensors are a piece of "....". The replacemet ones are plastic, they won't corrode. Good luck.
