just put some pics of my dads 51 (or 53?) merc 3 ton while it burnt. someone lit the seat on fire at 3 a.m......... it was a nice truck. anybody got a cab for this? my dad says it HAS to be a mercury cab... and close to southern alberta... he wont stoop to using the cab off of his 51 FORD 3 ton.
That's really unfortunate and senseless. I'm sure your dad feels pretty bad about it. Did he have it insured?
Was the fire hot enough to toast the cab sheet metal, or just the non-metal parts? Any chance of re-using the cab sheet metal - maybe with some body work?
What is the difference between a Ford and a Mercury? I don't know of any difference, other than trim work. Too bad we live so far from each other, I plan to pull the cab off of my '51 F-4 and replace it with a cab from a '48. The '51's cab is very solid and complete, I just happen to like the styling of the '48 and I have front sheet metal for the '48, the '51's front sheet metal is pretty rough.
If you feel like driving 1700 miles plus, let me know.
nope, wasnt insured at the time. waiting for the next rental house renovation, i guess. anything inside the cab is gone- gauges, etc, etc- sheet metal was pretty bad too. he just wants the merc trim, and he says he thought the grill was different, though i swear i saw a ford with the same grill here in washington...
That ain't right. Should have been a chevy. I have a few that need burned. Hope you can find the parts you need. If i come across any trim pieced around here i will let you know ( i usually can get things for free on these older trucks if i find them locally).
what a bummer. hate too see something like that. hope you rebuild it.any ford or mercury from 51 are the same grill just different chrome and mercury chrome is harder to find.
The Ford and Mercury cabs are identical. The only thing that is different is the radio face plate. I have a '51 F-1 cab and I'm in Saskatchewan. I'll toss in a Mercury radio plate.
From the first photo, it looks like the fire started behind the cab in the wood box.

Mercury was the brand that Ford used in Canada to market their trucks. There were some minor trim differences and different model names. For instance, the M-47 (for 4700 pounds gross vehicle weight) is equivalent to an F-1.
