timing problem on 302HO swap

Just completed swapping a 91 302HO in my 85 F-150 302EFI. Everything went well. Engine fired up, good idle no problem. The surprsie came when I went to set the timing. The timing appeared to be 180 out from where it was suppose to be. I chased few other ignition wires around and could not find the right one for the light. Finally I hooked the timing light up the coil wire and there was the mark sitting pretty.

I know the HO engine it ran perfectly fine in the cougar it was it was in getting mid 20's on the highway. There was absolutely no doubt I put my old distributor in the same way the Cougar one came out. When I was redoing the valve covers I did notice that four rocker arms looked a little newer than rest. Since this was low mileage "granny' car I ignored it cause all looked pretty clean. Did not bother to check aligment of timing chain and gear which had Ford part no.s on it. It was double roller steel so I did not need to mess with it.

Anyway could this be some sort of pot luck mistake and the chain and gears were misaligned the "right" amount so the engine runs normal. Could it be a bothced up warranty reapair. I'm confused????

I think the HO motors have the 351W firing order. Did you wire it up for the 302 firing order?

No 1 is No 1 no matter which firing order. If I had the wrong firing would it run smooth? Me thinks not? Anyway I copied the firing ordered off the HO. Actually I used it's cap and wires as they were routed. I checked the wiring routing 4 times to make sure no 1 was no 1.

Okay, I found out the HO timing mark and harmonic balancer are set up for the drivers side. On the transplant I had to use the old timing gear cover and timing marker set up for the passenger side Now if the difference between the two is 90 crank degrees then I am okay. I just have to time from the next cylinder in the firing sequence.

What you should do is get #1 on TDC, and set 0 on the damper. Then time it.

Thanks I guess that's what I'll have to do. I apologize RTM, I really was't trying to come across as a wise guy, just poorly expressing my frustration!
