i have noticed companies are now starting to make 0w10 oil. what are they going to use this for? royal purple makes some and redline is going to. are the automakers going to use a 0w10 oil in the future?
NEO Synthetic has had a 0W-5 product for years. These are racing oils primarily for qualifying. When the engine has to produce maximum power and only last a couple of hours, thinner is indeed better.
I don't know about the 0W10 oils, but I have used 0W20 Mobil 1 twice in one car that normally saw 5W30 Mobil 1. The car was in the Portland Oregon area so we got temps down into the high teens once in awhile at night, 30s-40s in the day and during summer it could once in a great while get over 100 for a day or two.
The 5W30 worked fine for me no matter what, including in all my other vehicles over the past 25 years including in SoCal where it is HOT more often than not.
The 0W20 oil made significantly more valve train clatter on start up after sittng all night when the temps were in the 20s. I did this two winters in a row and the noise bothered me so I switched back to 5W30 and have no plans to go back to 0Wanything unless I move to Nome Alaska.
I am guessing the 0W20 and probably the 0W10 is just too thin a base for anything but extreme cold or like the other fellow said, special purposes.
I suppose Mobil went to 0W20 to fit some of the car mfg specs for a xW20 oil. My 2004 Lincoln requires 5W20, but at least in my car this causes the valve clatter on cold start up in 40-50 temps(dealer fill and Motorcraft filter just before I bought it). I am now using 5W30 Mobil 1 syn and the clatter is almost non-existant(have a Fram which is known for clatter, have a box of Wix for next change). I just got this car this year so am still learning it's quirks, but it definitely doesn't like thin oils, and it talks to me when it has some.
I see no purpose in everyday use for 0Wxx oil except for marketing or if you live where they have plug ins on the parking meters for your block heater. If you don't even know what a block heater is, don't even think about 0Wxx oil you probably don't need it.
