Computer Books

Is there such a thing as "ONE" book on computers that could explain, for an example, how to re-format a hard drive or do basic repairs.

Or is the computer field moving that fast that books can't keep up?

Get the 'Dummies' books.
These are the best out there. Plain english.
I own a bunch of 'em.

I know. I know. The right books for me.

Thanks 00BlueOvalRanger, I'll check into them.

They'll probably be the right books for me too.

I love the "Dummies" books. There real easy but the never ending "yuk-yuk" humor get's a little tiring. If you mark that out the rest of the book is a breeze. I wish I was as smart as Angela Bennett .

The reason why I was asking is because my pc crashed big time and now it's collecting dust. The back-ups I made didn't work.

Oh well.

I better take care of this Sony Vaio laptop. LOL

I'm gonna check out these books for sure.

I was running Norton's System Works on my old computer to fix glitches and it was deleting vital coding that my computer needed to work. I never knew the importance of it. It didn't tell me. I finally had to restore the computer back to the state it was at when I pulled it out of the box. But... the restore could not complete because there were important information that was missing. Everytime I had Norton fix a glitch it would erase something the computer needed which inturn would create more glitches, and so on.

I had to buy a new computer.

Do you have the Restore CD's? Maybe some wiz kid can help. The solution may be simple. Yea, check out the "Dummies" books. There good. There is also a line of "Idiot" books that are good also. They pretty much have us dummies and idiots covered .

The Dummies books are the very best for someone learning on their own. I have taught myself all of the software I know and have made a living of having that knowledge.

The first thing to think of when you approach your computer is to approach it just like you approach your truck. You can do - or undo - ANYTHING as long as you prepare for the worst, first. Save often, make backups, and be fearless. If all else fails you can always ask for help.

1bigsteve, the backups I made were no good, so I tossed them in the circular file.

I think when I made them, I didn't let them do a complete burn, so I guess it was a partial backup; useless.

I had McAfee Virus Scan Security Suite V.4.5.1B.

As a matter a fact I do have all of the original restore discs form Dell; but it's windows WHY? (ME). LOL.

I didn't like windows ME.

Dummie books, here I come.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Percy, I expected the worst and got it.

I'm going to pop in some discs, push the buttons and enter "YES" to everything it asks.

It's going to be fun.

If you are to the point where you have to completely whipe out everything and start over, make sure once you start up on the system disks that you format the drive(s) completely. That way - say it was some nasty little virus causing the issue - you are certain to remove it entirely so you don't have to play the disk swap game for hours all over again in about a week.

I guess I'll have to start from scratch because my hard drive is completely blank.

Nothing on it. Just 1's and 0's. Must of had a pretty good virus.

I have a "copy" of xp pro, but it doesn't seem to work.

I'll figure something out.

Thanks for the help; and the rest of you guys too.
