Hello all,
I have a 71 F-100, 2WD, 302. Anyways I just replaced the whole brake system, all new drums, new shoes, new wheel cylinders, new MC, ( added the power booster), new front line hoses, new springs. Bled the brakes numerous times!!!
Here is my question, when I push Quick and Hard on the petal the truck pulls HARD to the right. But lets say when I come to a stop sign and ease easy in the brake the truck does not pull.
What should I look at, the front end has had an aligment a few months ago. The truck only pulls the right when I hit the brakes fast and hard.
Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
It could be that the radius arm bushing on that side is worn and allowing the wheel to move back a bit. Usually, though, something like that is cause by one side having a looser adjustment than the other side. Jack up the front end, and give each tire a spin. If either side spins easier or longer, adjust the brakes. You should have a slight resistance to the spin, and the tire should make about a turn and a half before stopping. Be sure to check the wheel bearings while you're at it, as that may cause a pull too.
Improper adjustment of the self ajusting wheel on one or more of the wheels will give this problem too, I have found to adjust it so that the drum drags just a little when rotated on all four corners. Then the truck/car will glide to a nice stop no matter how hard you hit the pedal. If you have one wheel adjusted more thats the one that will cause a severe pull because it's already indicating more wear.
i would say that one of the self adjusters is tighter than the other side jack it up and if one wheel spins easier/longer than the other theres your problem, pretty much what everyone else has said
Unscrew the little adjuster until it makes contact with the drum. Then back it off a tad. My brakes pulled hard right after replacing a cylinder and stopped doing it over time as the self adjusters were able to do their thing. Yours will too.
How was the self adjuster on the brake hardware when you pulled of the drums. These should be cleaned and grease on the threaded portion, and on the opposite portion of the adjuster where it spins. Also inspect the adjuster for worn tooths.
Also any grease or oil on the brake shoe or brake drums will make it grab.
