A few weeks back the Explorer started making a gear whine, sorta like a power steering pump that's showing some age. I first thought it was the PS pump, until it went away when the truck was in N or P. Further investigation...and I realized it was from the trans. Sounded like the pump in the trans was starting to go....with 36000 miles !
Took it to local Aamco (who had done the 30K trans maint.) and talked with the owner. Since it had literally went out of warranty three weeks earlier and was 300 miles over, I took it back to my local dealer. There weren't thrilled...but standing your ground goes along way. I'm a true blue Ford fan and I've NEVER had a Ford trans fail (and many were driven hard).
As it turns out, something in the trans let go and spread metallic dust/chunks throughout and wiped out the whole trans. Ended up doing a complete rebuild and gave me an extended warranty for $495. Felt we got treated good, but you CANNOT let the dealer get pushy. Remember...YOUR the customer !!
djhoosier, good for you, that is the way it should be. I am far from being a pushover, agressive if need be and fifty-plus years mechanical/technical background, but I cannot get Ford to continue trying to correct my '04 transmission that is going to cause premature failure of drivetrain components. My Explorer was one year old this week and has been less than 12,000 miles; it is one of the reported 174,000 FoMoCo manufactured vehicles that had the incorrect transmission fluid installed at time of manufacture. My transmission has the exact problem that FoMoCo technical service bulletin 04B22 said may happen due to the incorrect fluid, Ford does not care, they will not approve further warranty work to find the problem and fix it by any FoMoCo dealer anywhere. I have not stopped trying, have started formal process and looking into others. Respectfully, Tickedoff2
