Break out your tape measures!!!

Can one of you kind '53-'56 owners please measure the distance between the top of your rear fenders to the bend on the bed side?

I bought a step side bed off of a 19?? and I'm trying to find out if I need to move the fenders down or not. Mine measures 3" from the top of the fender to the bend on the top edge of the bed side.

Thanks much - Brad

Thanks.
That's exactly what I was looking for. Looks like I need to move my fenders down 1".

If I were you, I'd bolt the running boards on and see where they hit the fenders just to be sure. I bought a parts truck mainly for the bed which turned out to be from a later model. The bolts are higher though I haven't measured exactly how much higher. I thought I had heard three inches but one inch makes more sense. I believe Abe had a similar problem and his body man bent the running boards up at the end to make them fit. I thought a three inch bend would be impossible so maybe one inch is the magic number.

Thanks for the info Guys.

I think what I'll do is call Northern Classic Trucks and get an official measurement. They pre-drill the fender holes and offer both the 53-56 bed and the 57-72 bed. I'm assuming they know the difference.

I'll just fill and redrill the fender holes and be on my way.

Thanks again - Brad

Northern Classic Trucks says that the official measurement is 1-1/4" difference between the 53-56 and the 57-72 fender mounting holes.

For what it's worth - my fender measures 3 1/2" from top of fender to the crease. I replaced the bed side panels with new and copied the hole layout from the original units. I made a template, drilled and then scribed the layout for square holes. After drilling them I filed the holes square to fit the fender carriage bolts like the original. There is a certain amount of horizontal & vertical play when attaching the rear fenders - not much but some. Of course the replacement aftermarket side panels, as well as many other metal parts I purchashed, are not always "exact". I think the main consideration is how much forward or rearward movement is available for a proper fit to the rear of the running board. If the running board is too snug to the rear fender loosen the fender and shift it back a little. You could always open up the fender flange holes a bit too.
