91 taurus problem

I'm asking this question for a friend, who has a 91 taurus with 122K miles on it, and a 3.8L V6 in it.

it normally runs just fine, but sometimes, it'll decide its not gonna start for him. from what I've heard, since I had the luck to hear the problem today, the car will crank normally, but its like its either not getting any spark, or no fuel. Once it does start though, I think it sounded like the engine was missing every so many seconds on a few cylinders.

Anyhow, if someone could give me an idea of what's wrong, I'd appreciate it. his mechanic looked at it, and said nothing was wrong, but I think the mechanic is an idiot so I'd ask someone who DOES know what's wrong how to fix it, and if its even worth fixin it.

Pull the codes, all you need to do is jumper the EEC Test connectors located under the hood and watch the CEL blink:

Pulling Ford EEC-IV Codes

Keep in mind that the CEL does not have to be lit for codes to be stored.

Post the codes when you get them.

The "go out to it cold", and not start thing sounds like the fuel pump.

Also, Taurus's (Taurii?) are notorious for the module on the distributor failing. It'll stall while running, then not restart. Let it cool down, and suddenly it starts up and runs like normal.

Which is it for you?
