'82 F250 with a 302 and C6 trans. Just bought the truck. Tranny slips bad when I first set off, truck cold. Have to rev her up pretty good then she'll take off. After driving her for a bit it shifts perfectly normal. Seems totally fine. But then, next time I try to take off after she sits for a bit, it'll slip real bad again and I have to get revs way up for it to kick in to gear. If I'm on a hill, she'll roll back quite a bit before hitting gear. Had the whole thing flushed and filled and filter changed, with no luck. Any ideas? Rebuildable? Is that my only option?
In the future, I believe that it would be a good thing if you dont rev the engine to make the tranny engage.
Well that's the only way to make her go at the moment. I won't be driving her much till I get this fixed. I just thought somebody might have a more precise idea as to what might be causing those symptoms.
What happens if you let it warm up while idling instead of revving the motor? Does it eventually engage? Thats what I ment.
If revving it is the only way to get it to go, then you really need to get it fixed before you do alot more damage.

Hmmm, haven't really tried that yet. And I did pretty much figure it probably needed rebuilt I was just clinging to some small hope that maybe I could adjust something and be on my way!
Add some of the tranny seal fix stuff at the local parts store. It may provide enough life to the seals for a temp fix but it will need attention soon and the sooner you fix it the cheaper the fix will be. Right now you only need clutches and seals, piece of cake but if you burn up anything else then the rebuild cost will go up.
If you have a locally-owned transmission shop, Id go there and talk to them. Avoid AAMCO and MR TRANSMISSION like the plague! With them, theres a good chance that you will get a complete different transmission and yours will be used as a dud.
Cool. Now we're getting somewhere. I see that the going rate around here for a used C6 is about $150. I was considering just grabbing one and throwing it in, only problem is it's difficult to know what you've just dropped $150 on until it's in the truck. I fear the rebuild will cost $600 or more which is not an option at this time. Maybe if I remove/install the tranny myself and have them rebuild it out of the truck, it might not be so bad. Least then I'd know what I have, not the risk of buying a used one.
Fluid is the life-blood of your transmission. Have a look at the fluid color and smell in your $150 tranny. If it smells burned, or is discolored at all, high-tail it (run) away from it as fast as you can.
