Hello everyone. Very informative site here, with alot of knowledgeable people. Hoping for some brainstorming here. I own a 03' 250 lariat with 5.4 motor. I have read some older posts concerning faulty speedos, and believe I too have a bad speed sensor. But here is where mine differs. My speedo stopped working a while ago, along with the odometer. I know, who's complianing. But would like to correct this now. What is different about mine is, I also have auto door lock issue. Sometimes doors do not lock for a while while driving, then, suddenly they click to lock position. Today, when this happened, my speedo started working again, for about a minute, then died again. Could there be another problem besides just the vss, such as a common ground point, or do you think all still arising from vss.? You know, I also owned a 97 150 lariat, which also had electrical problems concerning door locks, and courtesy lights that stayed on well after they were supposed to. I really thought I was leaving all those problems behind with my new truck. Guess not. Any other ideas, or go straight to the vss.
The VSS is the culprit. Or loose wiring to it, chk connections at the sensor. The other symptom is wierd tranny shifts! If the tranny is not shifting properly at times it also points to VSS.
Door locks are locked when the pcm gets the signal from the sensor that the vehicle is moving with a timed delay from a relay internal to the pcm.
On your f150 more than likely the door closed switches were failing causing the lights to stay on

Thanks for the reply. Guess I will go buy a sensor, after checking the connections..
My door locks have always locked on my '03 as soon as I turn the key on, not to the start position. I thought this feature was integrated inth the ON position of the key and not the VSS. They always unlock when the key switch goes to off.
Both of our's are '03's, why the difference or are they both goofy?
Heck, I thought mine was the norm....(????)
You might try just pulling the sensor and wiping off the black, ferreous, "sludge", insuring the connector and sensor contacts are clean, and re-installing it. Watch that o-ring!
This takes a lot less time than getting a new sensor, and you may get the same result without the cash outlay. If it's really a bad sensor, you will have only wasted about ten minutes, but you'll be more confident about spending the money on something that will likely fix the problem.
Ah, maybe that's it!
I have an aftermarket system that was installed before I took delivery.
The FOB locks the doors and disengages the starter circuit and alarms when the door opens.
The key does NOT disengage the alarm nor enable the starter, the FOB must be used.
Why would the FOB have anything to do with what was supposed to be a keyed action, ie locking the doors with the key on?
Or....
Is the aftermarket simply doing it before the VSS has a chance to do it?
Nah, can't be...
I don't use the FOB at startup....
If the rig was already unlocked with alarm deactivated it wouldn't have the FOB in the loop.
So, the VSS should do it at key activation anyway, even without the FOB system?
Just trying to figure out WHEN Ricky's doors should lock and IF it is a function of the VSS.
HUH?
Do I even understand what the heck I am saying???
(as he reaches for more coffee to wake up)
Steve,I have a viper alarm system on my 02.I just rembered that was the way it was when they first installed. It can be programed out. I had them change it.
They did.
POP,weve seen this hundreds of times here,it's usually the sensor. Clean the area around the sensor before removing also to prevent dirt getting in the rear diff.
Also if the sensor is covered in ferrous material, consider changing the fluid /friction modifier soon after sensor replacement.
