If your main bearings are bad, then the rest of your motor is probably shot too. i would just rebuild or replace the motor. Even if you do get the bearings and replace them, you're putting them together with a cranks that has chingered up journals and they will just go out again.
It's a 2003 Ranger. Why in the world would the engine have tanked already? Doesn't make sense.
If the bearings really are shot, a good machine shop will be albe to clean up any other damage. I would rebuild if it really needs it.
My concern is that some shop or dealer is trying to take this poor guy for a ride telling him that he has toasted main bearings when he really doesn't. I suppose it's possible but unlikely unless he ran it up the street without oil or something. Just doesn't pass the funny look test.
Federal law used to require auto manufactures selling vehicles in the USA to provide parts for 10 years. Not only is the engine size not noted, but much of the story behind the problem is not yet disclosed. BTW, the need for main bearings on something so new is not only interesting, but it makes me wonder how the diagnosis came about. I mean, after all, usually a rod bearing on an engine will fail long before a main bearing. This isn't just a Ford thing, it's automotive engines and etc etc as a whole. BTW, if he ran it w/o oil a rod is more likely to fail than a main. I too sense something fishy here.
