starting problems

There are probably plenty of threads related to this but im going to make another.
I went out to start my truck today and it wouldn't start.
It fired a few times and did actually start once, but when i let off the gas it died. I tried it a few more times and i'm getting nothing. i looked down the carb and could see it was getting gas.
After a few attempts it didn't start even with a small amount of starting fluid. Is my problem in my ignition now or what?

Since you have fuel at the carb, I would look at the ignition. If it is a high mileage engine, the timing chain may have jumped a tooth.

the previous owner suspected the timing chain as well. he refreshed the engine with rod bearings, flex plate and other items that i can't bring to mind right now. The ONE thing he didn't check was the timing chain. It was running rough before with air coming back up through the carburetor. I believe the timing chain may be off a tooth. This isn't the original engine. It was puled from a 71 lincoln at 98,000. I don't know if the timing chain was off a tooth or if it is stretched enough that it finally jumped another tooth or more that it just won't start at all now.

Have you checked for spark at the plugs and or coil wire yet? Since the engine is out of a 71 does it still have points? If so they may be worn out, or the condenser is dead, or the wire has broken off at the points or.......

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Dec-02 AT 10:59 PM (EST)]well today i went and got it started for about 5 minutes. I pulled the 1 and 5 plugs and they were fouled and cracked on the insulators so ill give them a try by replacing them. I hope the parts store gave me the right type. Im wondering since their AC delco but they should still work. The ignition is not the old points system. It has been upgraded somewhere in its life. I believe my carb may have some junk in it too so i will check and see if it needs cleaning.
