Smile gettin a diesel

hey guys, my name is Dave and i'm getting a 97 f-350 4x4 crew cab psd with a long bed. the truck has 110k on it. it is very clean. i've checked it over really well. I was wondering if anyone has had any issues with this type of truck, being that it is so long and heavy? any carrier bearing problems,u-joint problems etc. i forgot to mention it has an automatic in it. i am really looking forward to being a member of this brotherhood and i look forward to any replies.thanks in advance.

Congrat's! You'll love it! Here is some good reading esp. for the OBS truck. Its the PSD bible in my mind!

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your new love.
I have an OBS truck so I can help you with some info; although, I have a short bed with crew cab so I am a little shorter (bout 14" so I am told).

I have not heard of any unusual mechanical problems related to size. The midshaft carrier is a potential fail point, as is any U-joint, just keep regular maintenance and you should have no problems. The E40D tranny is a potential trouble spot if you do a lot of heavy towing or serious 4 wheeling. If that is the case I would suggest that when it fails get a modified tranny such as the one sold by Brians Truck Shop it costs a little more but gives you piece of mind. There are some tranny mods you can do such as installing sonnax valves and tricumulator springs in the stock valve body, replacing the stock torque converter with the heaviest duty aftermarket you can find, and adding a larger more efficient oil cooler.

There are some PSD specific areas to check, Like be sure the turbo shows no signs of dusting and find out if anti cav in coolant was kept up to date.
I higly recommend Steve Bazs' site ( in Itfoxs' post) it a real gem

I was going to recommend that you read baz's site, but was beat to it. Just for kicks and grins, change the fuel filter, and change the oil, both are vital to this engines life.
