salvaging a 2.9

the old bronco2 is heading to the junk yard. After too much $$$$.$$ and countless hours wrenching I just can not justify keeping it on the road.
So I'am pulling the motor to put in my sandrail.

the bronco is a 1987 b2 4x4,new ford 2.9 w/50k miles cast pollished and mild
porting heads.I feel it is worth saving!

What in needed to salvaged from b2 to run my 2.9 off road?
pcm,02s,tps,distributor?
I'am looking to stay very low bugget, with most money going to headers
and new trans. in sandrail.
Any info would be a great help!
pics coming soon.

THANKS
Bill

Welcome to FTE!

You'll want to save EVERYTHING. Computer, wiring harness, distributor, the whole ball o' wax.

Thank you for the reply.
maybe it would be a better question to ask what i can get
rid of and sill keep the motor runnig?
I don't to keep the extra 50# of wiring.
what does the pcm need for the motor to run right?
I'am going to trash the power steering, starter circut, heater, fan, and
anything I can.
would it be better to go with a carb set up?

The problem would be finding one. The 2.9 was EFI only, and the manifold etc. from a 2.8 won't fit so you'd be left with making your own. Now, if you have the fabrication skills or deep enough pockets to pay someone who does, then it's do-able. -TD

Well...

Think about how the engine works. You need spark, fuel, and air. Cut accordingly.

You need the sensors the computer uses. All of 'em. The transmission ones you could probably do without, unless you're keeping the trans that came with the engine. Then keep those sensors.

Converting to a carb will be difficult. I dont think there is a 4 barrel carbureted intake manifold for the 2.9L. I know there is an Offenhauser intake for the 2.8L, which I'm 95% sure wont work on a 2.9L. Then you'd need a different distributor so the advance works correctly, as the stock one is computer controlled. Honestly, I'd just keep the EFI on it.

Now, if you go modifying things, like porting the heads and putting different cams in it, the speed density computer wont like that at all. You could either have your computer reprogrammed, or get a Holley Commander 950 programmable EFI system for it.

That's all I've got for now.

thanks again for the quick help, the motor is ready to come out(- electrical).
I think I've got the fuel, air,& spark figured out.
My biggest fear/problem is not giving the pcm enough info to run right.
I don,t want to keep all the wiring to confuse me later,my plan is to cut old wires
and run new to tps,os2,dist.,injectors???
does anyone know what the stock pcm can live w/out?
sorry for the ignorant ???'s but its been a long time sence I worked on
the B2.the carb question was just to get a response! (sorry but desperate times
calls for desperate questions) and I'am happy getting 120-150HP with the
stock ignition.the trans was a stick and will be addapted to a vw bus trans.
I just want to keep it simple,if possible.

Don't cut any wires, you'll be sorry later. Unplug the engine harness and pull it with the motor, and after you get it out take out the computer and harness together. You'll end up with a lot of wires and stuff, but it's better to have too much then to have to go back to the wrecking yard and pay for something you had before.

There are some excellnt books available on Ford EFI systems that spell it all out for you, and can help you get all the nessesary systems online. Charles R. Probst's "Ford Fuel Injection and Electronic Engine Control" is one of them, along with "How to tune and modify Ford Fuel Injection" by Ben Watson. There are of course others as well, but these two are good, and available from Amazon.com -TD
