Ignition key
If I was too get a new key cut for my 99 Explorer that was not cut at Ford and did not have a chip in it would it start my truck? I was told that the chipped keys were mainly for the keyless entry system. I just find it hard to swallow a bill for $110+tax to get a key made.
Any thoughts?

Don't know for sure about the 99's but on my '02 you need to key with the chip (PATS). However, don't pay the $100+ at the dealer. About a year ago, I purchased two PATS keys as spares for my '02 on eBay. Paid around $25 for both. When I got them, just had my local hardware store cut them and after following the procedure in the owners manual had them working just fine. You do have to have 2 current working keys to program additional keys for this to work however. If you only have one, I think you must go to the dealer.

I can't remember what year they changed, but the '99 may take a different chip key than my '03 (which took PATS). I ordered two spares from a guy on e-bay that turned out being a locksmith in Charlotte NC. He sent the keys and the programming procedure, and I had them cut at Walmart, they worked like a charm (but you must already have 2 working keys). Seem's like I got them for around $15 each. Look on e-bay, even if you don't get them there, and you can fairly quickly tell what the '99 takes (seems like I remember a different kind in the older systems). By the way, chipped keys have nothing to do with remote entry, they have to do with anti-theft device (that's why it won't start without the chip and the car programmed to the chip).
