I am selling my Stang and getting an Expedition. I have a few questions before buying...
1. Are there any known major issues with any certain models/years?
2. Is the 5spd auto available? And if so, what year?
3. Any general info/warnings I should know about?
just a lil' something to look for if you're getting an older model. Make sure and switch to AWD while driving, if it's blinking it ain't working right (didn't know this myself).
What years are you looking at? Keep in mind the 2000 MY has a recall on the cruise control deactivation switch. This issue has caused vehicle fires, including some folks whose houses burned down b/c the Expy was parked in the garage. Just make sure if you're looking at a 2000 that the recall work has already been done.
The 03+ models have the independent rear suspension which resulted in a much roomier third row seat (but also some problems with the rear ends on early build 03's). Also the limited slip diff was standard on 03's, but became an option on 04+.
Maybe if you provide some more info about what you're looking at, what model year(s), price range, miles, trim levels, etc., folks could give you more specific feedback.
A factory warranty is going to be hard to find, unless you get an 03 (and even then the 3/36 will expire on the anniversary of the build date, which could be any time between about 8/02 and 7/03 for an 03 MY). But you may get lucky there. Many dealers will give a 30-day guarantee though, but I'd bet that's not what you're looking for.
The low miles will be hard to find on an older model, just because it's not that often that someone puts less than 10k per year on a vehicle.
I would say that your best bet may be to look for an 01 or 02, either an XLT or EB. I've heard that these model years were among the most reliable Expy's on the road.
No, but in the used market you will probably find more EB's with a sunroof than XLT's. If that feature is important to you. Also, I know with the 04 and 05 you had to have the side impact airbags in order to get the sunroof. Not sure about the earlier models. But someone buying an XLT may have been a little less likely to want to spring the extra $$ for the sunroof.
The '01 year is the most trouble free, look it up on consumer reports. I lucked out and got an '01 all the options, very reasonable price from a soccer mom (driven lightly) and already had the Ford 100K mile extended warranty, just paid $50 transfer fee. Very happy, no problems at all with mine. You could get a better deal private party, just ask a lot of questions and really check out the vehicle before you buy.
You're kidding me!?... with this big *** motor, crappy gas mileage, and in a vehicle that's twice as heavy... it only comes with the same HP as my mustang came with. It better have some mad torque to even be worth this kind of money! I dont want a damn slug...
Well...the 260hp stock Expy won't win any races but I found it to be quite adequate for towing and general use. And the 5.4L has more torque than the 4.6L you had in the 'stang. If you upgrade the exhaust, get a chip and run premium fuel you can add a little more seat of the pants HP...but this was never meant to be a sports car.
