Was there ever a meaning to XLT or is it just a jumble of letters that had the right ring to it? I kinda prefer the good old days of Ranger and Custom, over XL and XLT.
I can't guarantee the answer, but from what I can recall. The names are basically levels of trim package. I believe the order form least to most plush are...
XL XLT Laredo and finally the "super primo" Eddie Bauer" I think the XL is pretty much basic, no bells and whistles, not even sure if electric windows. XLT(what I have) Has the usual things like AC, Power windows and locks, AM/FM stereo etc, console, fancy hubcaps, carpets etc. I think the Laredo has a bit nicer interior, nicer hubcaps, and I think they all have that funky split side window on the supercab. The Eddie Bauer is really nice, pretty much a Cowboy Cadillac. It would be a shame if an Eddie Bauer were ever taken off road ;^)
Ford still makes Rangers, I think, they are the little Ford trucks with 4 bangers and V6s
Now, I have an '89 F250 XLT Lariat. I have all the options except power windows and locks. I believe in 89, PW/PL were still just an option and not part of the trim packages.

My wife's '92 Aerostar has power locks and windows and tinted windows. We bought used, but I assume all that came with the XLT package. I know I have none of that on my '95 XL F150--and am perfectly happy without it. But to get back to the real issue, is XLT an acronym or just a jumble of letters, and if an acronym, what does it mean?
Yep, the good old days. Custom trucks, Rangers, etc. While the minipickup Ranger is nice, it is too bad the name couldn't have stayed with the F-series. Now Eddie Bower, I just never cared for--too long. But Ranger--short and sweet!
