I always pinging problem with my Ranger 1999, 4.0L 4x4. But I have new fact about that. I observed that when I changed the spark plugs it stopped pinging. After few weeks it restart pinging. I removed all spark plugs and two of them on the left engine head are cover with oil deposit ( see photo ).
Possibly NKG are not very good spark plug but before that I used Motocraf (ford) one and I had the same problem.
About intake leak. I observed that I also have a little bit of oil deposit on wires an pipes beside the left intake. But is it normal I have oil deposit only on 2 of the 3 spark plugs on the same head ( intake)?
just an idea... it could be possible that a few of your valve seats on that head have back out just enough to let oil slip in ,, my best friend had this problem on his 87 ranger. he would change plugs and it would run fine for a few days till they cloged.. then it would start missing again.
Geof: Question: Since I can not seem to look at your picture and you mention oil on the wires is the oil on the outside of the spark plug? If so one could easily suspect a valve cover gasket.
Many have made statements with regard to the adverse effects of using other than Motorcraft spark plugs. Need a little more information clarity and will try and help out.
Yes I had a little bit of oil on the outside part of the spark plug and on the wires. I don't understand the problem with valve gasket and why if oil leak by the valve, I have oil on my wires and on the outside part of the sprak plug. I understand it is normal I have oil on the sprak plug but why I have it outside?
Do you have a method to test the valve gasket? Is it difficult to have acces and repair it?
like rangerruss stated, suspect the VALVE COVER GASKET not the valve gasket. if oil gets past the valve cover gasket, it will be on the outside of the engine and that is probably why you have oil on your plugs snd wires.
You could try tightening the bolts that hold your valve cover in place. Do not over-tighten them as they may break off. Sometimes that will cure the problem otherwise you are looking at changing the gasket.
