Have a 96 Bronco that is currently sitting in my garage and can't get it out of park. The motor does start and run. Checked the fuses and yes the fuse that controlls this, plus the stop lights and other things is "blowed" Inserted a new fuse and it "blowed" immedeatly from a direct short somewhere. Question is: Is there and over ride on the transmission inter lock? My delima is, can't get it out of the garage, can't load it on a trailer to take it to a mechanic. I'm in the country about 20 miles from town and looks like I'll have to have a wrecker come and get it. Any ideas????
You can disconnect the shifter cable from the transmission, and manually move the linkage on the trans. two positions that will put you in neutral so you can push it out of the garage. Then shift the trans. back to park after it's on the trailer. If you have to start the Bronco and have two people disconnect the linkage and manually put the trans. in reverse or drive whick ever way you want to go, have a person in the truck hold the brake pedal down and start it by jumping the starter sellenoid. If you start it be very careful.
Thanks 94 XLT White/Silver 302.....Got the POS in neutural and pushed out of the garage. Tomorrow, I'll take it to the stealship and have them trace the problem down. I'll get someone to help me and we'll get it shifted into drive and head to town. Thanks for the advice...saved me probably a $50 wrecker bill...Thanks again. trakman
Heres an update if any of you are interested. Found out why the fuse was blowing and smoke was in the area. The switch on the front of the master cylinder (cruise controll cut off switch) was shorted out and melted. Found out that there is a recall on this switch BUT not on a 96...only the newer vehicles (cars and trucks) like from 2000 and up. Now get this, the recall is because they will catch on fire if shorted out...WELL DUH! guess they don't care if my older Bronco burns to the ground! Anyway got the new and improved switch on it now along with a small pigtail to adapt to the old harness. Only $19 and everything works fine now.
