alright guys live in mountain home idaho and went and watched motocross in town for the first time, now i am soooo hooked. never ridden a dirt bike, grew up on 4 wheelers my whole life. what would be a good beginner bike, i expect to crash a few times, want something cheap so i dont feel too bad laying it down. im also kinda small, 6'4 250 lbs lol, what would my move my big butt around. i want my sons to start riding, there were 4 yr olds taking jumps i couldnt believe it, they were so small. i have a 2 yr old son now and a 10 day old son, i dont think hes old enough yet, heck he cant even hold his head up yet. but any advice on a good beginner bike for me would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Here's a thread from a couple of months ago that covers the same subject. Lots of good suggestions there, but the general consensus was that a big guy really ought have a bigger bike, even to start out with. Remember, just because you have a lot of power on tap doesn't mean you have to use it all the time, but it's there when you need it.
If you want to race, you should probably go to a CR or YZ 450 4-stroke. At your size/weight, this is the best option. Also, the power on the four stroke is much more manageable for a beginner. Let us know what you get and how you do.
from my experience, 2 strokes you'll have to keep on them pretty good. other wise you'll have problems w/ the carb over flooding. have a older 93 ktm 550 two stroke that is way to fast for me. i'm only 5'10 190 lbs. i think i laid it down about everytime i rode it. Im also a beginner too. 250 cc or bigger should be big enough. you'll be surprised how fast you can get these bikes going now days. i haven't had a chance to to test the 4 strokes, but i'm guessing they would be a better choice for us beginners.
tried to sell my 550 once, but buyers say it's too big of a bike for them.
suggest you ride the 250's first and start your way up until you find the right bike.
