I'm new to A/C. ('69 F250 CS with factory A/C.) It only blows ambient air temp. Everything works but the air is not cold. I live in Wisconsin and can't get actual freeon (sp?) here. I've heard that I could still get a freeon recharge in Illinois. Anyone know if this is true? I'll gladly drive down there to get cold air. Can someone please explain the basics of a recharge to me? Thanks.
freon is still available at most auto repair shops but is expensive. you might be better off to get r 134 and a conversion kit . this is available at most all parts stores. it consists of new seals and fittings required by the new style freon. you will still have to vacume down the system before you charge it so if you dont have the equipment you will need a shop to do this for you. you should be able to get all the freon and kit for around 60 bucks, but i dont know what a shop will charge you to do the rest.
you can but id get some dye in the system first to check for leaks. maybe one can with dye in it so you dont waste alot of money on freon leaking. once the system is solid fill it to specs. if i remember right the freon is around 50 or so bucks a lb. so just a little bit with the dye is gonna run you as much as the conversion materials and with the kit the seals will be new so you dont need to run the dye when you charge it. the conversion could save you half of what you pay to keep the old stuff. but the old stuff is colder. the cab area is not large in these trucks though so 134 will do the job well.

Reason: addition
My '71 with dealer installed A/C, had 2 cracked hoses when I bought it. I replaced all the rubber hoses and put a new drier in. Checked the oil level in the compressor then took the truck to a local garage and had them evacuate the system and verify it would hold the vacuum.
If it didn't I still had a leak somewhere. Then they charged the system w/R134. It has been working fine for 2 summers now. I don't think it blows as cold as R12 would have but it is comfortable enough in our 100F summer in south Texas.
You can also buy a product called frezze 12 at most part stores as a direct replacement for r-12. Its about 5.50 a can and you dont have to change anything. I used it in my 70 and its been working for two years in the oklahoma heat just fine.
Thanks everyone for the good info. I'm gonna do the dye first and see what's up. Hey, bshackelford711, where'd you get that conversion kit with the dvd? That sounds like something I could use.
