ok guys... i'm sick of riding around with this muffler in the BACK of my cab..! i can't get a day off when i can take this thing to a muffler shop so i'm gonna go crawl under the truck and see if i can put this thing in myself... if anyone has done this and has some pointers... speak up...! thanks guys..!
bone stock exhaust... i think... i'm gonna go get an air tool set down at wally world.. that'll give me an impact gun for the clamps and a whiz wheel cutter to get the old ones off... only thing i don't have is a welder...
I think you are gonna have a little problem without a welder. The factory muffler is an offset in/out design so when you cut it out you are left with a problem - the btm won't just slide on and clamp in place. I staight piped my own truck right after I got it before I got an aftermarket exhaust - and have done a few friends trucks since then.... and I used a welder every time.
from what i have heard, you can loosen the clamp on the little "s" pipe and spin it around so that it lines up straight with the over the axle pipe, then you just have to cut that pipe because it is a little too long.. the only thing you need a welder for is for putting the hanger from the stock muffler on the btm.... supposed to be easy... so was the tranny cooler...! i don't care, i'll suck it up and get 'er done...!
Ahh I see - well then I say go for it. I always just welded a new piece of pipe (muffler in your case) on a diagonal between the offset pipe ends after you chop the stock muffler off. Hope it works out for you! I don't remember there being a seperate piece of S pipe that could be turned around - I was thinking there was a clamp on the IN side of the muffler and that it was all one part from there to the exit - but it's been a while since I saw a stock exhaust I guess!! lol Good luck to ya!
You can get away with clamps if you cut close to the back of the stock muffler and leave enough pipe to slide into the BTM. I got some pictures of my BTM installed if you want to check them out for idea's. LINK
Good luck!
sorry guys... i took a real good look at it and decided against it... i don't think i have the right tools... looks like i would need cut the "over the axel" pipe to make it fit... and i'm not sure about how it would line up... i'm off on wendsday afternoon... think i'll go ask the guys at monroe what they think... i just hate paying more to have that installed than i paid to get it... and i know i will..!
waranger... let me know what you find... just curious...

sorry... you gotta take that attaboy back... i don't think i can get this done without a welder, at least not the way i need it to be... one thing i have learned in my years as a shadetree... sometimes you have to know when you don't have the right tools for the job...
you are correct and just buying a welder is not gonna do it. to weld and airtight fitting on thin gauge tube out of position (meaning not flat on a workbench) will take quite a bit of practice.
