Leaking Gas Tank

WHILE INSTALLING MY MONROE AIR SHOCKS, I NOTICED MY GAS TANK WAS LEAKING. It actually looks like the tank has rusted thru in some spots, so I believe it is time to replace it.
Does anyone know of anyplace to get one locally in New Jersey? Shipping a tank would be very expensive and I dont want to put a used one in. Thanks in advance!

Check your local auto body supply store. They usually deal with companies that sell sheet metal parts, and those companies usually sell gas tanks as well. One place I used was crosscanadaparts.com They have an affiliate in the US that uses the exact same catalog, but i am not sure of the name. They generally don't charge anything for shipping, becuase they take orders daily, so you might get your new tank overnight!

I'm in exactly the same situation. Just replaced the fuel line from the tank. Thought the tank was okay...oops! Put it all back together now my fuel line is good but the tank needs to be replaced. Not sure if I should try to replace with the same part or some type of substitute.

I have had good luck fixing a leaking metal tank with epoxy putty that you can get at any parts house. I remove the gas cap to relieve the pressure in the tank, mix and apply the epoxy. Some types set up in just a few minutes. I leave the gas cap off for a few hours so no vapor pressure builds.

Yeah, i used stuff like that for a temporary fix. My leak was at the supporting strap, which is common. The leak eventually came back as the corrosion grew, so I had to quit using the tank. If you need to save up some money for another tank, do the epoxy or the leak stick. Hopefully that will get you by.

i used magnum steel, the kind that is solid that you smash together, to fix my motorcycles gas tank....the bike was left out in the rain for 5+ years with no gas cap, i grinded down the rust and used about 3 tubes of that stuff to fill the numerous holes all over the bottom of the tank....i did it just to see what would happen, now i ride the bike often and only have a small pinhole to grind out and seal.....that stuff blew my mind......plus it can be applied to a wet surface and still work....

Wow, those are all great ideas! Thanks and I will try some sort of epoxy/ putty first. Replacing the tank is a little too much to spend right now. Finding a new tank isnt the problem. I have found several ones on line at decent prices, it's the labor $$$. I can't do it my self so I want to have a mechanic do it in a shop with a lift. That is going to cost some serious $$$. So I will look for a epoxy putty and try that. Thanks again for all the help from a great forum for Ford truck owners!

C.Lee, if you aren't able to do that kind of work yourself, maybe try to post a help wanted in your area chapter, and see if anyone can help you. If you lived in my area, I would be more than happy to give you a hand, for free! You can save money by finding a good used tank at the junkyard.
I love to tinker with old Fords; it gives me great pleasure.

I found a 19 gallon replacement tank at "car parts wholesale" on ebay for only $59.95 plus $44.90 shipping. But I dont know what else I may need, ie strap, gasket, seal etc...or if the existing strap needs to be replaced. And I am looking into a local "VO-TECH" for night adult classes for a place to do the replacement, as far as other methods-sealer, "EASTWOOD" has a sealer made from epoxy that I will attempt to use, but I dont know if it can be applied with the tank having fuel still in it, should I drain it or try appliying it with the cap off as SwOkcOffRoader did?,

When I used epoxy on one tank it was on a hot day and gas was squirting out of the pin hole. When I removed the gas cap the pressure in the tank was relieved, and the leak slowed to a drip. The epoxy was able to seal and stick at that point. (I couldn't get the epoxy to stick with the gas squirting from the tank) The repair lasted for several years while I owned the truck.

I got a 19 gal tank from LMC truck. I don't recall exactly but the price was very reasonable, and I'm pretty sure shipping was not $45. Came UPS.

If I was doing it again, I would go ahead and do the preventative maint and replace the sending unit on the old beast. It is an easy job with the tank out, and really a pain if it fails shortly after you just had the thing in your hand.

In any case, get a new filter sock for the sending unit and a new sending unit gasket. New tank may come with this, but you will need it.

Sounds like a plan, I will try the epoxy first and see how it does. Then if it works....good thing. If not then I will have to swap the tank, and the other items at the same time, gasket, filter sock, etc..... I cant wait to get started in the night class at the Vo-Tech....WOW, I CANT BELIEVE 'I' AM ANXIOUS TO "GO TO SCHOOL"!!!
Thanks again for the tips fellas! If we ever get together for a Jersey chapter event, I am gonna fix up a mess of good eats for you guys!...(yes, I can cook too!)
