I'm not trying to bash anyone but I don't understand something. Since I was a kid I remember tinkering, repairing, adjusting, replacing, and modifying all sorts of things on all sorts of vehicles. We were called shadetree mechanics.
Now there is a guy who is a "tuner". I understand that you can change parameters in software and a couple of other things. It seems like everyone is a tuner now and it mainly cosists of raising a hood, revving an engine up, and wiping off a shiny part. If you have a dyno and a SCMT and you dial in a car I can understand it, but what is the average tuner doing?
Real tuners are the guys who've built their motors and are tweaking the computer parameters to extract the most power possible. They're young, hi-tech and mostly love imports, but are still real hot-rodders. What you may be encountering are simple RICERS who think or wish they're tuners, but are just posers who wouldn't know a cam or piston if you beat them in the head with it (an appetizing thought, there...). People like these have been around a while, but 20 years ago when I was young, we just called them EDIT.
Please do not bypass the language filters. Thanks.
The "real" tuners have much respect in my book. A couple monthe ago I was at a pro mod race in Bradenton, FL. These inline 6 toyotas were runnin low 6's at over 230mph!
NOPI is at Bristol dragway this weekend. Wish I had the money to go. It's amazing the ricepower they get outta those engines. I love cubic inches but I have to respect what those real tuners get outta those cars. Now if I was to go stick 30psi of boost on my 514 I think I might beat em though Isn't that called Top Fuel? haha
To be a modern day 'tuner', you have to be able to fit a large soup can to the end of your exhaust.
No, they use big Folgers coffee cans! Everybody knows that!

Ok so lets see... I built a high peformance Ford FE 390. I've got electronic ignition on it, and a Holley programmable electronic fuel injeciton system. I program the thing with a laptop. That doesn't make me a "tuner" does it?
The difference between a tuner and a ricer sets it up a little better for me to understand. I can appreciate the guy that can get the big HP out of the little motors, but I know that ultra baggy pants and "type r" stickers don't help.
Then theres alot of ricer rednecks around here. hahaha Love those old loud camaros and mustangs. Lotta ricers too though. I love watching the loud cars at Bristol and then see them not even get over 100mph in the traps.
My grandpa has an old '69 camaro SS that he drag races I hate most ricers out here that try to run at Gateway Speedway. The one guy was on a croch rocket and he was goin pretty fast then he hit his first nitros button and he almost crashed. Then he hit the second nitros button...... Ya he didn't last long on the ground he flew up in the air and hit the ground and rolled. It looked pretty cool and he was fine.
Tuners make cars fast. Ricers try to make cars look fast, but fail. A well built "sport" compact gets my respect, even if it's definitely not the kind of car I would ever want, whereas a rice rocket is just embarrassing. And the term rice can be used on any car; I have seen riced-up BMW's, Saturns, Mustangs, even pickups.
A friend of mine is a good definition of a ricer. 96 acura integra. Claims its a "sports car". there isnt anything sporty about it besides being a two door and having a 5 speed. It's lowered 2 inches, has neons under it and inside it, a system that makes your hair move, and euro lights. bought a K&N and msd plug wires and swore it had more power. I told him 4 h.p. isnt noticeable. oh yea has stickers on it to. "G sport racing" stickers. only the "r" in sport is hard to read, but i cant say what it appears to be. I dont wanna loose my FTE privledges...for the 3rd time.
A tuner around here might have a chip and tunes it from "regular mode" to "extreme mode" a whole 15 hp difference. Plenty of ricers, no tuners.
