do I need and EGR valve?

I have a 351m. I have considered changing to EFI. I have also considered changing to a 4bbl. I have and EGR valve now. Do I need to keep this operational or can I remove it?

You don't have to unless you have emission testing. It does help cool the intake charge at part throttle and can help elimiate detonation, but it isn't a requirement. I don't have one on my 460 anymore.

It lowers the peak combustion temperature in the cylinder, not the intake charge...

That's what I mean't, it cools the combustion temp to help keep detonation away.

Also depends what type of computer you get. I'd recommend EEC-IV from a fed car, not CA, without an EGR. A later EEC-V computer can be custom programed with a tuner easier than adding a chip to an EEC-IV but I'm not sure if you can get a EEC-V without a EGR. Some higher end tuners can turn off the EGR function but I haven't seen too many advertised that can do this.

EGR add's nothing for performance. It's only objective was to reduce emmissions. You can't get more hiosepower trun to burn gasses without oxygen. If there are detonation concerns, address it with the right A/F mixture and spark timing.

The argument about EGR can go either way. Primarily, you can run a leaner mix with more advanced timing, and get the same power while gaining mileage. You can also run regular or mid-grade rather than premium gas, and save a bit more. It's not a hindrance to anything if it is operating correctly.

If it's all about HP EGR can't help. The stochiometry simply isn't there. That said, EEC computers will turn off all EGR functions at wide open throtle so in that case, EGR doesn't hurt. If, as you say, it is working properly.
