power booster not working. Help?

I was having problems with the brake pedal getting hard and losing braking power and the brake light on the dash coming on, particularly in reverse. Midas played with the rear brakes, and it got worse. They said it was the vacuum booster. I replaced it (and the master cylinder), and it's still not working right. It takes time to build the power, and then it loses it, and the dash brake light comes on and the pedal gets very hard. I pulled the vacuum hose with the check valve, and can feel the vacuum puffing. I bled the master cylinder. Any suggestions anyone?

My first response would be to check the vacuum pump and it's related plumbing, along with the tank.
But we are going to need to know what truck we're talking about. Please fill in your signature with as much info as possible. Don't be afraid to abreviate, as the space is limited. Just put your cursor over the word signature at the top of any poster's response to see what info we are talking about. And lastly don't forget to check the "show my signature" box.

Where's the vacuum pump and how do I check it. The hose to the booster comes from a little can. everything from the can to the booster seems ok. It's a 96 f250 hd 7.3 psd. the midas guy says its a vacuum booster not a power booster. what and where is the tank you suggest checking?

it's a 7.3psd (96) . The hose to the booster comes from a small can. I didn't feel any leaks. Where is the vacuum pump and tank you mention, and how do I test them? Thanks for your reply!

your vacum pump is right below the a/c compressor with about a 3/8ths rubber hose coming off it. you need to use a vacum gauge to check because using your finger is not accurate enough. the brake light comes on because it senses low vacum. the rubber hose goes to a vacum manifold where it splits to a number of other accesories. the manifold is on the drivers side fender well. the vacum should be between 17-21 in. hg.

hope that helps
