Hello! I own a few old trucks and they all need a little tlc. I'm looking for answers to questions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Question #1 Truck: c600 coe, year 1956? This truck is in good condition, always starts, great tire condition, it has a newer dump bed on it that works great. Recently had brake work; new back lines, master cylinder etc. But... I still have no brakes! It uses or loses brake fluid but it does not leak out anywhere. I have been told it could be the brake booster or the new master cylinder is bad. Any thoughts. Also if I were to sell this truck any ideas on an asking price? Thanks
If you are losing brake fluid, it has to be leaking soemwhere. Have you pulled all four wheels to look at the wheel cylinders? Anything else replaced besides the lines and the master cylinder?? Have you looked inside the cab to see if you may be leaking brake fluid into the cab from the master cylinder?
As far as price goes, obviously depends on condition. The bigger trucks are much more of a specialty item. Only a small number of folks that play with these. Consequently, lower demand and lower price to be had.
Does the truck smoke when you step on the brakes? I once had a master cylinder vacuum booster leak on a COE truck. When I stepped on the brakes the vacuum hose would suck up the fluid and the truck would smoke.
I am not sure older trucks such as that would have the issue with the vacuum. There are several trucks such as yours on ebay that might help you with the price. Where is your truck located?
95% chance you take that booster out and its full of fluid. It all depends which side of
the diaphram has the fluid. If the fluid is on the vacuum side it could smoke. Take it
to NaPa for a credit on a new one. The big book has all the pictures of all kinds of
frame mount boosters. My loader has the same booster as my 50 F6 and it is $150 and
change. A Bendix of course.
This is going to sound like a really stupid question, but..... Are you sure the brakes were properly bled when the brake work was done? Could the fluid actually be very slowly dis/replacing the air in the wheel cylinders and brake lines that normally is bled out? Could be pints!
Julies-----WOW Great answer. way to go girl, got a bunch of us old guys scratching our heads now, is she right who knows, hell who cares but is one hell of an answer.........
I just had one of these the other day, bled system twice, lost 1 pint of fluid in 40 miles, NO leaks anywhere
R-bled ,same thing ,lost 1 more pint...still no leaks to be found
Removed booster, used a suction bleeder to dip into booster, pulled out exactly 2 pints..different vehicle , but same deal.
I didnt know your old truck had a booster..?? If it does, there's a good chance you will find fluid in booster..Since the booster is now contaminated, might want to replace it, of course the mastercyl is bad also...just my .02$
