I have never tried opera, so I cannont speak of it, but if it uses IE's engine, then I don't want to. As far as being free, Wolf, it does not have a hidden price. Firefox has its background from Netscape. It is a team of volunteers that wrote it and keep it running. "Open source" programs are begining to find their way into more and more computers, just look at the linux craze.
Opera uses their own engine. It has the smallest memory and file size footprints of IE, Opera, Mozilla, Netscape and Firefox. Its been around since 1994, first as a research project of Norway's telecom company (Telnor) then as Opera Software ASA in 1995.
Its only a matter of time before you start seeing more security exploits for Firefox. People will target the browsers with the largest market share.
Bumpzter... Just so you know I own my own PC service company. You would not believe how many people blindly use IE because "It came with windows, so it's better!". Let me tell ya, IE runs about program that gets sent to it. So it's a HUGE security hole. It could potentially run a VB script that can run "format c:" with the proper tags to just do it and not ask questions.
Yeah, you're right. I started with IE because it came with my computer. I did read about people raving about Netscape. So I downloaded and tried it. Eventually went back to IE. Forget what the release levels were back then. Next PC came with IE again. Worked OK for what I do with it. Just an average user. Current PC came with IE6. Tried Firefox. Could see nothing special. Went back to using IE. Never have a problem that I know about.
But what do I know anyway? Not being a born-to-use-computers guy, I sometimes worry about loading and the deleting programs. Also interference between programs. But I may try Opera if I have the chance.
Yeah Ken, thats what I was saying earlier. Whoever is the biggest, that is who the hackers go after. Right now its IE, but in a short time it will be firefox too. If I run across a copy of opera, I'll try it.
So has Firefox gotten more popular than Netscape? Seems like you don't hear diddly about Netscape anymore. I used to use it, just got tired of how slow it loads and switched to Firefox. But I have been concerned with Firefox's growing popularity, I think the hackers are already noticing it. -TD
Where's the tutorial? I've had FF for a while, just wanted to make sure that I did everything correctly, as I am sometimes a 'palsy' with computers! ha ha
I have this "Trojan.Byte.verify" thing 2x that I can't get rid of, anyone??? Thanks in advance,
Yea AOL fired the developers that made Netscape, and those 12 guys went in and made Mozilla Firefox along with a lot of other stuff. I wonder what those guys are making..
Open an old version of Netscape Navigator, like version 3. Type "about:mozilla" in the address bar (without quotes) and hit enter. Now open a new version of Firefox and type the same. Evolution in action.
Hey Nightowl, why do I use firefox? It's elimintated the need for the spyware removal prrgrams. That's why... I don't need "watchdog" software running in the background to keep my systems clean..
Personally I don't care what browser anyone's using. I just said that I've never had any problems with IE. As the popularity of Firefox grows it's going to get more attractive to spyware writers and I'm sure they'll figure out how to do it after a while. If you can still say the same as above six or eight months from now, I'll be convinced.

I think as long as the Firefox team stays interested we'll see bug fixes MUCH faster than IE. Like within days. They are still doing nightly beta builds as far as I know. They have a nice bug reporting system that I have contributed to on a few occasions. Try getting someone at MS to listen to you for less than $75 per "incident"...
Spyware is way way down on my list of concerns when it comes to a browser. Compatibility is much farther up. Unfortunately, Microsoft has enough people suckered in to believing everything they do will become a standard. So you have Microsoft's version of CSS, XML, RSS, and other acronyms that quickly become accepted as "the standard" and ends up messing with other people who are trying to code for multiplatform/multibrowser 'standards'. Which is not to say that IEEE and W3C have been spectacular at creating and maintaining a lot of web standards, but Microsoft seems to be the best at taking those standards and messing with them just enough to break them.
Alright, after reading Webmasters' post a few days ago I downloaded Opera. I absolutly love this program, I have it all customized now. I'm going to go ahead and purchase it, defenitly my new browser of choice.
