currently i do not have enough money to buy both the exhaust and edge chip but, i can however get one or the other. my question is would it give me more air flow if i cut my exhuast right before the muffler and weld on a 90* until i can afford a full 4inch? i dont see how it wouldnt get me more flow seeing as the major bends that are used to go around the rear diff would be removed. any info would be great thanks
The big restriction is the stock muffler. Just cut the stocker out and replace it with a Walker BTM. blackclouddiesel.com has them for $54 shipped which is much cheaper than what I paid for mine at napa. The BTM is a straight through muffler and will lower your EGT's and the sound it really good, low rumble and you can hear the turbo more.
ya i already got rid of the muffler and replaced it with 4 inch pipe i was wondering if i should just ditch the rest of the piping after the muffler as well and just have it stop at the point the muffler would be and add a 90* to aim the exhaust at the ground
If you dont mind the sound and the fumes, but for it to help you would need to leave off the 90* bend and go with 45* bend and angle it out, the sharp turn would be hurting the flow you trying to get.
You'll get a lot more noise with a short pipe. For me I can't do that, my wife won't ride with me in the truck. A good experiment would be to disconnect the exhaust from the downpipe under the cab and test drive it. It's very easy, just take the two bolts out that hold the flanges together and it comes apart. Go out on the highway and floor it. You'll either love it or hate it.

i have a chip, downpipe 3-3.5 no cat and stock all the way out after the cat delete. i also have gauges. my egts have stayed pretty close to the same after chip install. now with towing this would be a whole different ball game. i say yes you can buy a chip/programmer now but if you plan to tow you'd better have the gauges!!!!!!!

I am sorry but that is not typical. Unless you always stay in a low setting (chip or programmer). With most chips/programmers the EGT's usually rise dramatically in the higher modes. ALWAYS GET GAUGES BEFORE RUNNING CHIPS/PROGRAMMERS The motor you save may be your own.
Now before a ton of people get on here and say that they have run X thousand miles with no gauges ........good for you. But I don't think anyone is gonna tell you it is a smart thing to do.
