I have an 87 ford f-250/460/carb/duel tanks. I was told by the ford dealer my rear sending/fuel pump unit may no longer be available. The parts guy need the tag number of the rear unit, well ford used a paper tag that is no longer on my pump. Does any body know if the fuel pressure on the front tank is the same as the back tank? Because I was thinking about purchasing the front unit, removing the pump and connecting it to the back. I would apreciate any sugestions.
Id like to add, the reason I am replacing my rear pump is because when I was returning from a trip(pulling a boat), I switch from front tank to rear, the truck stalled then restarted, but I could not go faster than 45/50 even on a down hill or flat surface. I went back to my front tank and I was back in business. Im ASSuming my rear pump did not have enough pressure for the carb.
The pump is much cheaper from Advance Auto or Napa, and they probably have the correct rear pump. You should also check the lines to make sure there isn't a kink them.
It's probably not available from Ford anymore, but I'm sure that Master or someone makes it. It could also be a bad switching valve if the truck has one. It may not be completely switching to the rear tank.
You could try bypassing the switching valve and see how it runs on the rear tank. This would eliminate the valve if it still has low pressure.
I replaced the switching valve about two years ago when I had a short I could find, the short ended up being near the carb. The tanks down, I found a pump at Pep Boys, Im going to purchase a larger tank for the rear. When its all together if I have the same problems then I will look into the swithching valve. Thanks for the info.
Sorry it took so long, I was trying to locate a Co. that made a larger fuel tank. Discount radiator has a 38 Ga, but the OEM top straps will not work, they dont sell or know anybody who sell fuel sending/gage units that will work, and the spare tire will not fit if some how I mounted it. Im still looking.
But I went ahead and replaced the fuel pump, the truck runs great without a load, I will have to load up the boat and jump on the freeway. I expect every thing is OK. Thank for all the help, if any body knows of a Co. that has larger tank or has done a safe modification please let me know. I take alot of trips camping in the desert, and I am allways nervous about running out of fuel, and paying big money at desert fuel stations.
