Alright, i finally found out why my truck wanders around the road all the time,it's the steering coupler
Now, i need some help to remove it, how are they things removed? i think there rivited into place, but im not sure..... any comments whould help alot, thanks
ok, its been awhile. There should be two nuts that hold the coupler together. but to get it apart I think you have to pull the shaft out. There is a pinch bolt and at the bottom where it connects to steeriing gear and another up by the firewall. You might be able to change coupler by just taking the bolts out so shaft will slide, otherwise you might be better taking it off. Just to help you out, before taking it apart take a Magic Marker and make index marks at the top and bottom of the shaft so as make sure you put it back in the same place. And definatly make sure you have it right and tight before driving!!!!!!!!!
Easy, 1. Remove bolt and nut connecting intermediate shaft to main steering column(intermediate shaft is telescoping section between main steering column an the flexible coupling). 2. Remove the cover from the flexible coupling and remove the nuts retaining the flexible coupling to the steering gear (cover just snaps on/off). 3. Remove the intermediate shaft from the flex coupling then remove the flex coupling from the steering gear. You will likely have to telescope the intermediate shaft somewhat to get enough clearance to remove. 4. I think everything is keyed to prevent misalignment during reassembly but check closely when removing parts.
Maybe, but if so mine must have already been sheared. I just clamped ViseGrip pliers around the lower section of the intermediate shaft and pushed toward the main column. It telescoped with very little force. There was no noticable radial or side-to-side play in the telescoping section.
