hub question

Can somebody please explain to me what the locking hubs do on my 1999 F350??? Auto and lock are the two positions.

I assume you have the ESOF on the dash.

When in Auto, the hubs will lock when you put the dash switch on 4x4 (lo or hi).

When in Lock, the hubs are locked always - regardless what the dash switch says.

The Lock is on there in case the ESOF fails to auto-engage them; you can still lock them manually. In normal driving, you want them on Auto.

I just learned in extended 4x4 driving w/ the hubs on auto, they will disengage leaving you w/ 2wd eventhough the ESOF says 4x4. When this happens you can go into 4x4 low and the truck will basically be in 2wd low. You have to switch back and forth constantly to ensure the auto hubs are engaged. For this reason I always manually lock them in.

I've never had this issue with my ESOF. I think this might be specific to your truck (maybe a small vacuum leak?) I've driven out in the dunes with my truck in 4 high on long weekends (hubs in auto position) and never had any issue with it disengaging the front (and I can tell because the tires up front were spinning).

It is a good practice though to manually lock them if you know you're going to be driving in 4 high/low for long periods of time to avoid the issues that customz has had.

2000 maybe you are lucky, I've had the vacuum check performed and there is no problem. Ford tech, service writer and eventually an engineer confirmed that it is designed that way. I can't imagine what for though. To save people from driving on the highway in 4x4?

The ESOF hubs engage on a 20-second vacuum pulse. After that, the vacuum is off, so if they locked the first time, and then disengage later, there's something else up besides a vacuum leak.

My hubs are sticking all which ways, I'll detail how:

1) Just not locking at all.
2) Locking for the 20-second pulse, and then NOT after the vacuum is off.
3) Locked in all the time
4) One locked, the other not.
5) Both locked when NOT in 4x4, and un-locked when IN 4x4

The way to unlock the hubs and make sure they are unlocked is to turn to LOCK and back to AUTO - that should unlock them.

One of these days I'll write that FAQ I promised long ago
