I have a '89 f150 5.0 w/5sp and have never had it past 3000rpm until to day and when the rpms got to 3500 the engine started cutting out. Is this normal or is there a problem?
3500 rpms is low for a rev limiter unless its aftermarket; I'd hazard that you have a problem. Possibly the coil breaking down or in need of a good tuneup. 3500 isn't much if you had to downshift to pass someone on the highway.
I have a new coil, module, wires, plugs and reman distributor. Engine runs/pulls strong and turns 2400rpm at 70mph and has plenty of power to pass at that speed in 5th gear. I also have a K&N filter and shorty headers with a single Flowmaster "40" muffler and the coil and module are Accel brand. The truck gets 15-16mpg with intown driving. Anyone else have this problem?
I would check the ignition just to be sure everything is set up right and also check the distributor and timing. My truck is a 95 5.0 auto and will turn more than 4000rpm with no problem.
The V-8s should spin to 5000-5500. My 89 351 has 140k miles on it and it has seen 5000 rpm a few times. The 302 I had in my F-150 spun to 5500 no problem.
When I put my 393 in, I had trouble with it cutting out at 3500 rpm. My timing was set wrong. It felt just like the fuel was cutting off and I thought I had inadequate fuel pumps for the beast. Turns out it was just my timing and after correcting it, it now runs up to 6000 rpm no problem.

The stock rev limiter was set at 5500 rpm on my stock 302, and believe it or not it was set at that for the inline six as well (i've hit it). I havn't gone past 5000 on my 89, but it feels those high RPMs a little more than my 302. The 302 reved a little higher, probably because of the hydraulic roller lifters it has. The 89 doesn't have those, and seems less happy above 5000 rpm.
However, it doesn't make much sense to go past 4200-4500....the power has long dropped off by 5000 rpm.
I normally don't go above 3000rpm but I had a brain fart and pulled out in front of someone and realy got on the gas. I just checked the base timing and it is dead on 10*BTC. Maybe the timing chain has to much slack?

Agreed. I spun my 351W crewcab to 5000 last summer exactly once. Felt just like 3500 RPM, except with a lot more noise and I could have sworn I saw the fuel gauge move. ;-)
