I was in the local mountains pulling the toy box. The temp outside got down to the low 40s. After two days of camping the truck would not start. It would turn over but it just had white smoke coming from the tailpipe (a lot). It did finally start after tryng for about 15 mins. Could this be glow plugs? The truck is a 95 350 260000 miles this was the first time I had it somewere that cold.
Check for voltage on the large terminal with brown and yellow wires connected to it right after the key is turned on with a cold engine. If no voltage, then the relay is bad, whether it's clicking or not.
Confirm on the glow plug relay. No power to any of the glow plugs at all makes for a very hard start like that. If you want to take the plunge and replace all 8 glow plugs, wiring harness's and the relay, you truck will start like brand new in the dead of winter.
What kind of price is that total Kwikk...at least in the ball park figure? For a 99
I don't know. LOL. I work on VW's!
Let's see........
8 glow plugs about $96.00 for the good ones.
Two valve cover gaskets: $110.00 (guessing from poor memory)
Two wiring harness's $110.00 (again guessing from memory)
Glow plug relay: $30.00???
3 - 6 hours depending on the conditions of the truck. Maybe more to extract siezed/broken glow plug tips. Average shop rate in Seattle: $70 - 98.00. I'm at $80.00 right now. $480.00.
$826.00.
Do it yourself and save the $480.00 in labor costs: $346.00.
