My dad was using his 1999 F150 in 4 LO to pull something out. He parked it and left it in 4 LO. Later on my mom had to go out so my dad told her to take his truck.
You know where this is going!... She starts down the driveway then gets on the road. After about 700 feet down the road she is thinking to herself "this doesn't sound right, it's revving to high". So she pulls over (it is left in drive with her foot on the brake) and notices it is in 4 LO. So, she gets the Electronic Shift on the Fly and switches it to 2 HI (while in DRIVE!) Starts down the road and hears BANG!
So, she calls my dad and him and I go and see what is wrong. My dad tries the 4 wheel drive (4 HI and LO) and they don't work. It only works in 2 HI.
He is upset and tells her to go to do her stuff and come home. When she gets home I tried out the 4 HI and LO again and it worked!
No weird sounds or anything. So, what happened? Just the meshing of the gears (not putting it in neutral while shifting from 4 LO to 2 HI)?
not really clear on exactly what your saying happend, but i bet it wouldnt go into 4x4 becaue the drivetrain ws still bound up, after driving it everthing came out of a bind and was fine
I'd imagine the noise was caused by the speed difference between the transfer case and the tranny when it shifted ranges, from lo-hi. This would put a fair amount of stress on the t-case but it doesn't sound like it hurt anything. Lucky dawgs!
You know, I would never have had that kind of luck. If I some how forgot it was in 4-lo and took off in it, I would have spun a bearing. Right there. If some how I didn't spin a bearing or do some other kind of motor damage, the second I flipped it in to 2-hi, the transfer case would have exploded and sent shrapnel through the pavement. Tell your mom to go buy a lottery ticket
(I've had one of those weeks. I'm going out to clean the gear oil off the driveway and maybe roll the truck off a cliff )
you should go find a old trans case, bust up the gears, crack the case, and then pretennd like your pullin gthe one out of the truck, and show it to her.
Reminds me of the time when my mom got in her car o leave the house, put it in reverse instead of drive and backed right into my cherry 1971 Mustang. What can you do?
So how did your mom change out of 4 low in drive? Isn't there a nuetral and zero speed requirement to change in/out of 4 low? My 1993 X has this feature.
It was in 4 low. She was supposed to put it in neutral the shift to 4 HI. But, she left it in drive (but foot on the brake and not moving) then shifted to 4 Hi and started driving away. That's when she heard the BANG! She got lucky!

P.S. We will see how good it holds up after snow plowing this coming winter.

What can you do? Don't park near women! I've had to drive my old man's diesel to work since mine gave up on me. I'm parking waaay out in the boonies to stay away from the office girls. Really.
It's not so much that all WOMEN are bad drivers, just seems to be the ones I work with. Anyways, If you really really wanted to, you could always pull to case plug and look for chunkies (the same as ancient gold pieces in the transmission business) in there just to be sure no damage was done; best case scenario, you get a t-case flush. If it's working fine, I probably woudn't worry about it if it were mine.

That is bull shi*. Every woman(usually the younger ones, at least under 30) I have riden with, makes me worry about if I'll live to get to where we are going. They don't pay atension(how ever you spell that), always on a cell phone, talking... I mean turning around to have conversations with the people in the back seat, and go to fast, and brake to late. I could go on and on about this.

It was just confused, Matt... What happened to your mom has happened to many 1st timers - including me. When I first got my truck I mistakingly twisted the **** to 4WD Lo instead of twisting the fan speed switch. Talk about a banging clang. It wouldn't go into 4 lo but it tried. Anyway that was ages ago and it's still in good shape.
And who says you have to be sitting still to switch the transfer case from 2 hi to 4 lo...or vice versa?
