The Ford owners manual says the vehicle has to be in nuetral and stopped to go into low range - for electric shift. That's how my '93 Explorer is. You can into 4 high anytime but not low.

It was just confused, Matt... What happened to your mom has happened to many 1st timers - including me. When I first got my truck I mistakingly twisted the **** to 4WD Lo instead of twisting the fan speed switch. Talk about a banging clang. It wouldn't go into 4 lo but it tried. Anyway that was ages ago and it's still in good shape.
And who says you have to be sitting still to switch the transfer case from 2 hi to 4 lo...or vice versa?
actually, mine won't go into 4lo unless you are in neutral...
