ok a couple of days ago, i posted something on changing my transmission from auto to manual. some people said go with a zf 5 speed or t-18. one person said stay away from the mazda 5-speed. its gonna hook up to a 351w. so are they talking about a mazda 5 speed from like a b-series trucks with the 4 bangers and v6's? would it be the one that bolts up to the 4.0 v6 or something. sound like a dumb question but i was just wondering.
Don't know what year your trying to put it in but I had a 96 f-350 and it was a ZF 5Spd. for sure. Keep in mind the bell does not come off of the ZF tranny so you have to know whay your picking I am almost sure the 300,302,351W are the same the 460 is not and the diesel is not but it can be made to fit the 460 (So I was told no facts on that one)
I liked my ZF it I thought it was a good tranny nevr had the mazda so I can't say
ok im kinda on a budget. so if i went to the junk yard and found a mazda or ranger with a 5-speed, i should be able to put it into my truck? there isnt any f-series trucks there with 4 or 5 speed so thats why i might turn to the mazda
If your on a budget this may be an option. What year and series is your truck?
I have a friend who put a 70's style 4spd. in his 87 F-250 4x4 and he said it was not that bad on his pocket keep in mind I don't know what parts he had but if it's a 250 around that year I could ask him what was involved the truck he had had a 351W in it. the old 4spd may be an easier find in a bone yard plus they had an awsome grany low gear

No the Ranger or Mazda tranny from 4-6 cyc. trucks wont work. I just listed them because they also run the same Mazda 5spd as the F150 and Bronco's.
If your on a real tight budget you'll get away much cheaper by using one of the 4spd trannys.
The ZF is going to be in the $1,000+/- range. The Mazda tranny's even though much weaker wont be to far from that price range.
gp42gpw- its an 86 f150 lariat xlt
txquadhunter24-what kind of 4 speed? like a toploader or does that only bolt up to big blocks? if i can use one of them i can get one for free that my dad pulled out of his 65 shelby cobra. it has a 460 so im guessing it wont bolt up... so if i found an old mustang or such it should bolt up as long as it came out of a 302 or 351 c, m, or w? now that i remember, there is a mustang there with a 289 and has a 4 speed with a hurst shifter. what kind of tranny would that be? would that work? thanks-logan
A wide ratio top loader would be marginal in a truck. 1st is too high, and no OD.
A close ratio (as originally found in 427 Cobra's) would be a joke in a truck, with a WAY too high first gear.
What a top loader will bolt up to is a bell housing with the right pattern. Input shaft length and size have to match the depth of the bell and pilot bushing. Spline count determines the clutch plate. Thus, it will bolt to any engine, even a chev, with the right bell and clutch.
An early Mustang might have a Borg Warner T-10. Try getting parts for that puppy. Or a top loader, the wide ratio version with a 289.
I would urge you to retain your automatic, get it rebuilt and beefed if appropriate. Trying to change to a manual is a false economy. If you do it right with a proper trans like the ZF, it's money city because it's not just the box you need, it's shifter, shifter location, clutch, drive shaft, cross member, speedo drive and maybe more. If you cob something together, you will soon grow tired of the haphazard reliability and will be sending your truck to an early grave as a result. Just my jaded opinion.
Isn't the 86 still a C6 auto? If so I say rebuild it the change from auto to stick without a doner truck is no fun in labor or money.
The old backyard guys can rebuild a strong C6 for under 500 bucks I have seen it done in my bosses 78 bronco plow truck.
Good luck in your adventure
Glen
thanks for the help guys maybe since i dont have a huge budget i will just beef up the c-6. see i have 35's and its got straight pipe so yea i run the truck pretty hard. and i think the trans is slipping a little bit and thats why i was wondering about the swap. see, when i take off from a dead stop, it takes about a second for it to grab and when it does you definitaly feel a big jerk. its real bad in reverse. so i can get it rebuilt and that will solve everything? with the 35's, would recommend a stall converter or anything else? just wondering
