I have found several threads here about crumbled Instrument Cluster backs that reference the fact that FORD still sells these and that they were used up until 92 in the vans. Has anybody got a part# my local ford parts guy is no help at all..........
I figure you people are smarter..heck my dog is smarter than the guy I talked to.........
'78 F100 Ranger XLT ......with gauges..........I just need the back piece
The part number should be in the plastic. Ford will want $$$ for the part. I would take a look at yours to see how many holes you have and whether it is gage or idiot light and wander thru a salvage yard. Look for an 80's van. Pull the whole unit and you have spares...

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Jan-03 AT 07:23 PM (EST)]While cruiseing ebay shopping for prices on clusters I found this one already to rich for my blood but thought maybe someone else would be interested cause it includes a 100mph speedo and low fuel economy light
The instrument clusters go on eBay all the time, usually from 1-5 on at any time. The ones with 100mph gages usually go from $20-50. The ones with 85mph speedo go for less. Shipping is usually about $7.

Brand new OEM Ford backplate cost me thirty some dollars last year.My pickup is a 77 with gauges-part number is E1PZ 10848A. Took me several tries at Ford (the number on your old backplate won't work). Why put in old junk?
Your parts counterman was lazy or a newbie. The guys that have been there a while can pick the part out from memory.
Because:
1-I am cheap
2-Used parts aren't all junk
3-All the other parts on my truck are used
4-I have 3 sets of gage clusters sitting on my shelf, besides the one in my 78, awaiting combining into the gage cluster of my choice (one has a 100mph speedo and it is the only one that cost me anything $18).
5-You get spares for the parts bin/box.
6-I am Thrifty -hehe
And no I won't ship one out because shipping would be higher than just going and getting one out of the junkyard. I wouldn't know which one to ship. Besides, when you go to the junkyard you find all sorts of nifty parts you didn't know you needed for your truck(s).

If the junkyard I visited today is any indication shipping would be cheap at twice the price.......
