I have a 1993 F150 5.8l V-8. My a/c is not getting cold, it may be a little cool. My high side pressure is about 275 and my low side is around 25-27 and I am having frost and ice form on and below the orfice tube. It has worked great up until this year. As for now I am still R-12. I appreciate your help.
Could be a number of things that will cause this. Feel the lines on both sides of the accumulator/drier tank. Do they feel about the same or is one side warmer than the other? Have there been any changes with the system like a new compressor, evaporator, etc? Have you checked to make sure the condensor isn't plugged with dirt? Pressures are within range, 275 seems a little high but not knowing at what engine speed and ambient temps that reading is being taken at it could be OK. Have you checked the blend door to make sure that it is working properly? You might try clamping one of the lines to the heater core with a vise grip to stop flow and see if that makes any difference. If it does then I would suspect you have a blend door problem.
there have been no changes in the system. It hasn't been opened. The inlet side of the orfice tube is warmer than the outlet side. The outlet side has frost on it.
Check to see if you have trash, etc. on the fan side of the evaporator coil. You will have to pull the fan motor to do this. I have an '83 with A/C that would freeze like you say. The problem was crud caught in the fan, and a 4" high pile of ground up leaves, etc that came through the fan. Also found that the MAX vent door was not opening fully due to leaves caught behind it. Cleaned everything by using a vacuum crevice tool to get in there where I couldn't reach with my hands. Results: Blower is noticably stronger at all fan speeds. Unit no longer freezes up, and works well. This was with R-12.
Last year, I had to convert to R-134A. It also does a good job. Drove the truck to Florida last weekend to go to Daytona Races. A/C was nice and cold all the way.
