Question 460 EFI vs V10

Can anyone tell me what the performance difference is between these 2 motors given all things equal as to ratios and vehicle weights? Thanks

Can anybody clearly explain how torque is used to pull a trailer and how horsepower helps or kicks in? Sorry I just don't clearly see how they differ? Thanks

I have had both. 460 EFI is a gas hog compared to the V10. The v10 runs very smoothly, nice even power through the range. BTW I have the 3.73 gearing in our E350. Don't even think of a 460EFI if you can get the V10 in a van that you can afford.

Not an engineer so cannot help with the torque vs HP question, I just know the V10 has plenty of whatever is needed to tow

Easy explanation for torque vs HP is torque gets you moving and HP gets you there faster. Formula for HP is torque times RPM divided by 5252 (it's a constant, don't ask me what it means). You want torque to pull your trailer. Generally speaking as much as you can get. Big heavy vehicles need high torque power sources to get rolling. As an example diesel electric locomotives use diesel to generate electricity which in turn is used to drive motors to turn the wheels. Why not use diesel dierectly? Because electric motors produce max torque instantly when power is applied, close to 0 RPM. Diesels, while producing high torque don't produce max torque until higher rpm. Somewhere in there the system losses end up being less than the benefits of using this system.
