carb, mani, distributer problems

my 72 f250 will not stay timed for nothing. sometimes it desiels bad and then when i adjust the distributer it stops but when i get up to 75 90 mph it starts so quietly back fire and as long as it back fires it slows me down. sometimes last longer then other times.

so i think i might have carb and dist problems so what should i do. and if i have to buy new what should i get "dont like holley".

i have a 2 barrel on it right now!

I had trouble with my '72' 360 that turned out to be a stripped screw on the points. I had to force a slightly larger screw in the stripped hole and got lucky. It held after that and ran great till the next tuneup. worth checking out. hope it helps.

take a timing light and look at the marks on teh balancer to see if the timing is moving while it idles. if so you need to get a new timing gear set. that's what it sounds like to me.
